Where to Buy:
When I started writing my book more than three years ago, I had an entirely different compilation in mind. I wanted to be funnier, looser/freer, and more charismatic. But I noticed a theme in my poetry since 2020, when I started reviewing all my work. I wrote a lot about my Blackness in the wake of public and viral atrocities. It made me think back to many stories I wrote back in the summer of 2013. Back when a boy who looked like me died for a reason other than hatred. Now, I see martyrs turn into legends. Immortalized through death and modern legends taking shape as they change the world. Then I remembered something an older family member had told me. They said, "Black people are the people of the sun." From there, I knew what I wanted my book to be about.
